Harry Copelan Thurmond

Harry Copelan Thurmond, age 71, of Snellville, GA passed away on Sunday, September 7, 2014 at his home. Harry was born December 26, 1942 in Greensboro, GA to the late Gartrell Hiram Thurmond and Sarah Copelan Thurmond both of Greensboro. Harry graduated from Greensboro High School in 1962. After graduation, he entered into the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country for 4 years as Master Jet Engine Mechanic. In 1966 he received an honorable discharge with exemplary service.  Following his time with the Air Force, Harry continued his work as a jet engine mechanic with NASA, where he was able to contribute his talents to both the GEMINI and APPOLO space programs. Upon leaving NASA, he returned to Georgia where he was employed by Southern Railroad as an electrician. After his employment with Southern Railroad, Harry joined ANACOMP, formerly known as General Dynamics, as a service technician with over 27 years of loyal service before retiring. Harry had many hobbies, talents and passions, but most of all he loved his family and spending time with friends. He also enjoyed traveling, cruising and was a fiercely loyal Georgia Bulldog football fan. Go Dawgs! Harry was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather (GeeGee), and brother and will be greatly missed. His witty personality was adored and respected by all who knew and loved him.

Harry is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sue Edwards Thurmond; an only son Ryan Heath Thurmond; and two grandchildren, Ethan Mitchell Thurmond and Isabella Rose Thurmond. Also surviving him are two brothers, Gartrell Hiram “Sonny” Thurmond Jr. and his wife Beth of Athens GA, Herbert Frink “Herbie” Thurmond and his wife Jan of Greensboro GA; sister and brother in law, Edna and Gus Wynn of Pendergrass GA; sisters in law, Ms. Shirley Buice and Mrs. Denise Whitlock; three nieces, Kim Thurmond, Traci Thurmond Martin (Chris) and Kelly Thurmond; two nephews, Scott Thurmond (Anne) and Chris Thurmond (Deborah); two great nieces, Sarah Elisabeth Thurmond and Kaylee Martin; four great nephews, Christopher Thurmond, Copelan Thurmond, McKellar Thurmond and Shannon Floyd (Becky); and best friends, James and Connie Christian of Snellville GA who were united as family through open hearts and true friendship.

I had the pleasure of working with Harry at Anacomp many times over the years. We had aviation in common as he served in the USAF & I in the Royal Air Force (RAF UK). He was genuinely a nice guy & he will definitely be missed by many.
Please accept my condolences at this difficult time.

I remember as a small boy watching Harry and his two brothers thinking " that is what I want to be like when I get old ". ( you guys probably were in your early twenties LOL ! ) The words I would describe Harry would be gentlemen, kind, thoughtful and comfortable with who he was. Ryan you were blessed to have your dad as great role model and have turned out to be just like him. Sue I pray that every laugh you guys had together will out number the tears you have right now. I will see you guys tomorrow and believe heaven just got louder with a another Thurmond there !

I am praying for the whole family and what a wonderful memory of Harry you will have for a lifetime. He was a special man as a husband, father, and just a role model. I will not be able to be in Greensboro tomorrow but will have you in my thoughts and prayers. I am having to spend so much time with my daddy also since he is not doing well at all. God bless all of the family and such great memories that will never be forgotten.

I've known Harry since 1985 having met him while working for DatagraphiX/Anacomp. We have worked on systems for many hours together, laboring hard to resolve system problems. We have traveled to many places working together so I've spent much time with him. He was a fantastic person, super intelligent and thoughtful, with a great sense of humor and a tremendous work ethic. I will miss him greatly. One of the finest gentlemen I've ever known.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Sue and Ryan, and also with Sonny, Herbie and the whole Thurmond extended family.

Sue and Thurmond family I offer my deepest condolences. Harry and I worked many hours together on equipment with Anacomp/decisionOne. He always had nice things to say to me and always encouraged me when he thought that I wasn`t as he called it "in my happy go lucky mood" When I moved here from New York he help welcome me and helped me acclimate. Words I remember Harry saying "I'm fixing to go" and "go mash the button" Harry I will miss you..... I`m fixing to go mash the button.
