Obituary

     William Lewis Duvall of Greensboro, GA, died Sunday, April 30, 2023 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, GA. Born January 3, 1929 he was the son of Albert Lee and Alma Jo Collins Duvall. He was a lifelong resident of Greene County and graduated from Greensboro High School. On July 9, 1960, he married the former Barbara Lee Saxon of Greensboro, GA. In the 1950’s he started the Duvall Livestock Barn that sold cattle at an auction each Thursday. He ran this successfully for thirty something years, selling it in 1990. Lewis was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Greensboro as long as his health permitted.  He was also a member of the Atlanta Dairy Board, a Director at BankSouth for 45 years, and a Director of Farm Credit. He was a more than 70-year Mason at the San Marino Masonic Lodge #34 F&AM and a more than 60-year member of the Royal Arch Chapter #154. Lewis was very proud of being the longest living Duvall man.
    Lewis was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-three years, Barbara Saxon Duvall in 2013; son William Lewis Duvall, Jr.; brother; Talmadge “Tal” Duvall; and sister, Jane Duvall Walton. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Lee Duvall Thornton and husband Ed of Greensboro, GA; and two grandsons, Clayton Edward Thornton and wife Lyndsey of Boone, NC and Ethan Lewis Thornton and wife Erin of Chatsworth, GA; great grandsons Daniel James Thornton and Marvin Lewis Thornton; brother, Melvin Duvall and wife Frances of Greensboro, GA; many other relatives and numerous friends.
    Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday May 3, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at McCommons Chapel with Dr. Terry Duvall and Rev. Mark Jones officiating. Graveside Services with Masonic Honors will follow at Greensboro City Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA. Serving as pallbearers are Albert English, Zippy Duvall, Billy Duvall, Jackie Copelan, Harold Reynolds, and Leonard Wright. Honorary pallbearers are Charles Rucks, Carey Williams, Jr., Billy Copelan, James Whiten, Jimmy Smith, Charles Dickens, Johnny Lewis, Joey Adcock, Jim Malcolm, and the Board of Directors of BankSouth. The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at McCommons Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The family would appreciate any memorials be made to Nathanael Greene Academy, 4731 Highway 15 S., P O Box 109, Siloam, GA 30665.
