William Hugh Kemp, Sr. of Eatonton, GA passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospice House in Watkinsville, GA. He was 85. Born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 23, 1935, he was one of six children born to the late Emmett William Kemp and Omie Smallwood Kemp. Hugh graduated from Campbell High School in Smyrna, GA and attended Georgia Technical. He married the former Evelyn Valerie Smith on June 3, 1957. Mr. Kemp was a veteran of the Korean War who served in the United States Marine Corps for four years and continued to serve in the reserves for a total of thirty-one years. After his service in the Marine Corps he worked for BellSouth/AT&T retiring in 1998. Then they moved from Smyrna, GA to Eatonton, GA where he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a devoted member of the Lakeside Church at Lake Oconee and a member of Gideons International. Hugh was full of love for God, family and country.
Mr. Kemp is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Valerie Kemp of Eatonton, GA. Also surviving are children, Denise Stancil (David) of Kennesaw, GA, William “Sonny” Kemp, Jr. (Leah) of Covington, GA and Tyrone Kemp of Eatonton, GA; sister, Nancy Creech (John) of Smyrna, GA; and brothers, James Kemp (Gloria) of Daytona, FL and Ronnie Kemp (Shelby) of Dallas, GA. Surviving grandchildren are Kristin Wilson (Jordan), Christopher Matthews, Daniel Kemp (Emily) and Benjamin Kemp; great grandchildren, Carter James Wilson and Mattie Wilson; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Lloyd Kemp and Boyd Kemp and daughter-in-law, Cathy Kemp.
Graveside Services with full military honors will be held Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery, 2025 Mount Carmel Church Lane, Canton, GA 30114 with Rev.
