William Frederick “Fred” Cook, age 78, of Greensboro, GA, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Washington, GA at Wills Memorial Hospital on December 15, 1946, Fred was the son of the late Omer Willie Cook Jr. and Emma Jean Lunsford Cook. He was a 1965 graduate of Greensboro High School and furthered his education with an associate degree from South Georgia Technical and Vocational School.
During his life, Fred dedicated himself to the service of his family, his community, and his Savior. Fred proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1970 achieving the rank of Sergeant. He was a lifelong resident and public servant of Greene County. Fred was instrumental in starting Greene County EMS in the 1970’s with his father Omer Cook. Fred retired from EMS as a paramedic in 1991. Along with his father, he ran Cook’s Service Station and Wrecker Service. He was a member of the Greensboro Volunteer Fire Department where he served for 41 years. The last 15 of those as Chief. Later, he worked with the Greene County Sheriff's Office as a jailer retiring in 2011. In retirement, Fred continued to serve families and his community working at McCommons Funeral Home. He was a member of Fork Chapel Methodist Church where he served in numerous roles.
Affectionately known as “Uncle Fred” by the children at Miss Zandy’s home daycare, Fred could often be found holding babies, playing with the kids, spoiling, and treating every child lucky enough to stay with Zandy as family. Fred’s positive influence and gentle manner were a blessing to many children in the community as well as the children, grandchildren, and great grandchild in his family.
As an avid Georgia Bulldog fan, Fred never missed a game. His daughters often joked, when planning their wedding, that they couldn’t get married on a game day because dad wouldn’t be there. He loved spending time with his family, going to the beach, the gym, watching NASCAR, having a clean vehicle at all times and a good afternoon nap.
He is survived by his wife, Zandria Lee Ballard “Zandy” Cook of Greensboro, GA; daughters, Angie Cook Simpson (Kevin) of Cornelia, GA, Beth Cook of Greensboro, GA, and Brittany Cook Davis (Brock) of Union Point, GA; son, Blake Cook (Lauren) of Ferris, TX; brother, Dennis Cook (Alethea) of Gray, GA; grandchildren, Cody Simpson (Jessica), Luke Simpson (Katie), Harley Anderson (Harold), Brody Sherrard, Zaylee Davis, and Blaze Cook; great-grandchild, Wrenley Anderson, and a host of other relatives and friends.
