Bill White, 82, formerly of Northfield, Illinois, and a resident of Great Waters for the past 24 years, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 15th. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Barb, as well as two daughters and sons-in-law; Christy and Jim Henry of Denver, and Ellie and Scott Ambuehl of Chicago; also by his brother, Larry, of St. Louis. Three siblings, Adele, Betty and Bud predeceased him.
Bill grew up in Springfield, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in architectural engineering. After a 6 month stint in the Army, he began his career, the majority of which was spent with the firm of Wiss, Janney, Elstner, Associates, of Northbrook, Illinois, where he headed the Architecture Department and served on the Board. WJE specializes in solving and correcting structural problems in buildings. They have offices nationwide but are headquartered in Northbrook.
In 1997 his love of golf dictated that he move to a climate more suitable than Chicago winters, so he transferred to the WJE office in Atlanta, where he continued as an architect and structural engineer and did expert witness testimony until his retirement in 2015.
Bill loved world travel with friends and family. He also spent many enjoyable hours with his hobby of watercolor painting. He will be fondly remembered for his love of family and friends, his wonderful sense of humor, and his kindness to others.
A memorial will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eatonton Library, 309 Madison Avenue, Eatonton; or to ORHS, 1020 Park Avenue, Suite 101, Greensboro. McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro is in charge of arrangements. There is a guest registry at www.mccommonsfuneralhome.com
