William Welty Obituary

William E Welty, age 93, resident of Greensboro, GA, passed away Easter morning, April 9, 2023.

Bill was born on June 29, 1929, to Dorsey Elwyn and Bernice Rebecca (Bollwinkel) Welty. He grew up in Walnut, Kansas and graduated with his Master’s Degree from Pittsburgh State Teachers College. Bill served as a pilot in the US Air Force earning the rank of Lt Colonel. Bill conducted active-duty missions in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. While continuing service in the Air Force Reserves, Bill taught high school economics, business law, and business machines in the Shawnee Mission Kansas School District.  He headed the high school Investment Club, always a personal passion. Upon retirement from teaching, he earned his CFP and worked as a financial planner.

He met the love of his life, Elva “Darleen” (Dixon), while training at Randolph Air Force Base. Bill and Darleen have two daughters, Linda Joy Welty, born in Salina, Kansas and Amy Lynn Anderson, born in Kansas City, Kansas. Bill and Darleen would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this September. Bill loved working on his Uncle Gilbert’s farm, playing and coaching basketball, golfing, fishing, gardening and spoiling his grandchildren. But more than anything, he loved his wife, Darleen.

Bill is survived by his daughters, Linda Welty of Greensboro, GA and Amy Anderson of Colleyville, TX. His grandchildren are Lauren Anderson (Juan Lessing), Neil (Emily) Anderson, Todd (Lara) Roth, and Rachel (Darrel) Sherman. He has five great-grandchildren: Ben Sherman, Will Sherman, Sam Sherman, Sofia Roth and Luke Roth.  Bill was survived by his wife Darleen for a mere two weeks.  She could not bear a life without Bill.  A special thank you to Tera Turner who has become part of the family over the last three years as a loyal and trusted friend, companion, and caregiver.

A joint memorial service will be held in Bill and Darleen’s honor on June 21, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery Pavilion in Fredericksburg, TX. In lieu of flowers please make memorials to The Alzheimer's Association or charity of your choice.
