Walter Smith, Jr Obituary

Walter Benjamin “Junior” Smith, Jr., age 77, of the Veazey Community, died Thursday, August 23, 2007 at his home. A lifelong resident of Greene County he was born on March 6, 1930 to the late Walter Benjamin Smith, Sr. and Meda Strickland Smith. He attended Meadowcrest School and served in the United States Army from 1953 until 1955. As a young man, he worked with his father in the saw milling business. His first job away from home was with International Furniture Company, he then worked for Roadway, and was a security guard at Wallace Dam. Later he drove a log truck for Strickland Logging, Merritt Logging and Boswell Logging Companies. He was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church of White Plains. He is survived by a son, Benjamin Jeffrey “Jeff” Smith, Sr. and wife Ann of Siloam, GA; two sisters, Beth S. Williams and husband Charles of Warner Robins, GA and Frances S. Lanier and husband Bobby of White Plains, GA; two brothers, Richard Smith and wife Ann of Greensboro, GA and Robert “Bobby” Smith of Greensboro, GA; sisters-in-law, Roberta Smith of Greensboro, GA and Ellen Smith of Kit Carson, CO; grandson, B. J. Smith, Jr.; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Smith and Reese Smith. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty United Methodist Church of White Plains with Dr. Joseph R. Bennett and Rev. Edward A. Swehla officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Morgan Lanier, Steve Lanier, Ben Lanier, Lane Smith, Martin Smith, Ken West, Lane Moncrief, Scott Williams, Tommy Williams and Michael Smith.
