Thomas Michael Mayers, Sr., of Greensboro, Georgia passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2011, at St. Mary''s Hospital in Athens at the age of 73. Born on April 15, 1938 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, he was the son of the late Lawrence "Bud" Mayers and Irene Klepper Mayers.

He was raised in Ft. Wayne, Indiana where he graduated from Central Catholic High School. He enlisted into the United States Army Reserves and spent time at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri and Fort Dix in New Jersey.

His first job was working at Shreck''s Office Supply in Fort Wayne. He then worked for 27 years at GTE Sylvania Company in the Telephone, Cable, and Lighting Divisions. Upon retirement from GTE, Tom worked another 10 years at Motorola Lighting in Product Sales Management. After retirement from Motorola, he continued to work as a consultant to the lighting industry for another two years.

Tom had a wide variety of interests including a passion for the outdoors and working on anything mechanical. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an accomplished handyman and was proficient in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and woodworking. He also enjoyed computers and technology.

He moved to Lake Oconee in 2000, where he was very active in his community serving in numerous positions. He was a certified State Firefighter and first responder and served on the Board of the Walker Church Volunteer Fire Department as Treasurer. He was appointed by Greene County as Chairman of the Hospital Board and was also a member of the Lake Oconee Development Board. Mr. Mayers was appointed to the Board of the North East Georgia Regional Council in 2005. He served on the Planning and Local Government Services Committee and the Developments of Regional Impact Committee since that time. In addition, he was appointed by the Greene County Board of Commissioners to the Northeast Georgia Solid Waste Management Authority. He worked for the Board of Elections where he served as Poll Manager for Advance Voting. He was also appointed chairman of the Census Committee for Greene County in 2010. He was a member of Christ Our King & Savior Catholic Church in Greensboro.

Mr. Mayers is survived by his wife, Kathleen Coine-Mayers of Greensboro, Georgia; two sons, Thomas M. Mayers II and wife Mary Ann of Crystal Lake, Illinois and Tim Mayers and wife Araceli of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Janie Schoenle and husband Jerry of Wolcottville, Indiana and Sally M. Rebert and husband Gene of Marysville, Pennsylvania; a brother, Larry Mayers and wife Janeen of Kendallville, Indiana; three grandchildren, Michael Mayers, Allison Mayers and Sophia Mayers; and a number of other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sue A. Zirkle.

A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, 6341 Lake Oconee Parkway, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Father G. Philip Ryan officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Thomas Mayers Jr., Tim Mayers, Michael Mayers, Tom Coine, Bob Coine, and Alvin Pope. A vigil will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night at McCommons Funeral Home.
