Susan Porter Obituary

Susan Marie Yarbrough Porter, 72, of Greensboro, GA, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family. Susan was the daughter of the late John Wesley Yarbrough and Ruth Norton Yarbrough. She was born on September 15, 1950 in Decatur, GA.  She attended high school in East Point, GA at Headland High School and graduated from Lake Shore High School.  She went on to attend Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC where she received a bachelor’s degree in English. On January 15, 1972, she married Louie Thomas (Tom) Porter. She got the bug for travel while her husband was in the army.  They lived in Miami, FL, Italy, Texas, California, and Hollydale, GA before settling in Smyrna, GA where they raised their daughters.  In 2001 they moved from Smyrna, GA to Lake Oconee in Greene County. Later in life they traveled with friends to Canada, Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Costa Rica, and many other exciting places. Even though her travels took her to amazing places, her favorite place was the beach she vacationed every summer for over 40 years.  No matter where she was, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and her family swimming in the lake, boating, tubing, or just relaxing on the dock. Susan loved music.  Along with her husband, she was part of the madrigals in college, was a member of the Marietta Chorale and later the Reynolds Chorus. She was a long-time member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Smyrna, GA where she sang in the choir and led several women’s groups. After moving to the lake area she was a member of Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church (PCA) where she sang in the choir, was choir director for a while, and led a woman’s bible study.  She served on the PresWic council for her local presbytery and loved sharing her faith and how God had blessed her.

Susan is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Louie Thomas Porter; daughters, Beth Mitchell (Billy) of Rutledge, GA and Ellen Koerner (Nathan) of Braselton, GA; siblings, David Yarbrough (Suzanne) of Powder Springs and Catherine Carter (Tom) of Roanoke, VA; grandchildren, Sam, Will, Matt, Emma Grace, Tom, BethAnne, Mary Kaitlyn, Lauren Taylor, and Jack Mitchell; Brendan, Grayson and Addison Koerner; and nieces, Elizabeth (Yarbrough) Rodger, Lauren Yarbrough and Julia Carter.
