Sue Brown Obituary

Sue Cronic Brown, a.k.a “Pookie”, of Madison, Georgia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, at her home on February 10, 2026. She fought a long battle with dementia.

Sue was born on February 15, 1943, in Barrow County, and was the daughter of the late Jasper Washington Cronic and Ruby Irene Boggs Cronic. She was raised in Morgan County and was a graduate of Morgan County High School, class of 1961. She LOVED school and was an excellent student, she hated missing school to pick cotton. She participated in clubs, she lettered in basketball and was a senior superlative, voted Most Athletic Female. Sue received her executive secretarial diploma from the Greenleaf School of Business in June of 1962. Prior to becoming a mom in 1965, she was a legal secretary for Robert Storey at the law office of Howard and Storey in Atlanta. On June 24, 1962, she married the love of her life, Ottie Brown, from Greensboro Ga. They lived in Atlanta for 3 years before purchasing their first home in Tucker Ga in 1965. They lived in Tucker until 2007 before building their retirement home in Buckhead Manor in Madison Ga.

Sue dedicated many years to the DeKalb County Board of Education, where she served as a media clerk and secretary from 1978 until her retirement in June 2003. She and Ottie were active members of The First United Methodist Church of Tucker, where they were two of the original members of the Christian Friendship Class. After moving to Madison, they were active members of the First United Methodist Church of Madison, GA. Sue and Ottie were members of The Easter Sunday class and loved the contemporary service. Sue found joy in gardening, playing tennis, reading, bird watching (hummingbirds were her favorite ) watching sunsets, admiring the moon phases, going for walks, attending family and friend gatherings and traveling. She visited Hawaii, Canada, London, Arizona, Oregon, California, New York, New England, Florida, several National Parks and cruised the Caribbean. She especially loved St. Simons. She was a talented homemaker and excellent cook, she cherished her role as grandma “Soup”, participated in church activities, and made a point of visiting shut-ins. Sue was also well known, by many, for her unusual “skill” of pinching you with her toes quickly and unexpectedly, racking up many victims, of all ages, over the years . Sue was kind, patient, funny, playful, smart, super organized, loving and supportive. She was always smiling and had an infectious laugh. Sue was a member of the Red Hatters and played ALTA tennis for over 40 years. She proudly volunteered at the Tennis Center at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta Ga. For years, Sue was a docent for The Madison Tour of Homes. She was a wonderful wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend and will be missed by so many.

Sue was preceded in death by her sisters Dot Sears and Martha Wheeler, brother Donald Cronic, nephews Don Cronic, Jeff Cronic and by her high school sweetheart and loving husband , Ottie Brown, who passed away in January 2025, after nearly sixty-three years of marriage.

She is survived by her daughters, Kim Alford (Rob) of Carrollton, GA, and Kelly Brown (Deana) of Suwanee, GA; and her adored grandchildren, Ty Alford (Bailey) of Newnan, GA, and Grace Alford (Bryan) of Carrollton, GA. She is also survived by her sisters, Betty Keever (Larry) of Social Circle, GA, Mildred Whitten (Donnie) of Buckhead, GA; and her brother, David Cronic (Janet) of Madison, Georgia. Sue also leaves behind her amazing caregiver, Joann Tucker Ingram , a number of nephews, nieces, and many friends. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Ga Hospice for their exceptional care over the past 2 years.
