Shirley Uhrich Obituary

Shirley Ann Benson Uhrich passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2024 in Greensboro, Georgia, surrounded by family.   She was born on November 30, 1930, in Greeley, Colorado, the fifth of seven children of Aaron and Esther Benson, immigrants from Sweden.

Shirley’s family always lived on the farm, but education was the theme of her life.  Grade school started in a three-room country schoolhouse located northeast of Greeley, Colorado.  The kids rode bicycles, walked, rode horseback, or sometimes went by car to Lone Tree School.  She graduated from Eaton High School in 1948 and enrolled at Colorado State College of Education.  College life began at Snyder Hall where she lived with two roommates.  The next year she lived in a sorority house with other sorority sisters and a housemother.  The girls took turns cooking the evening meal and doing housework chores.  It was an exciting college life!

Shirley married Donald (Bud) Uhrich, the first day of her senior year in college.  The couple lived in the Barnesville, Colorado area on a farm, but later moved to the farm where Bud grew up and moved again to their own farm north of Greeley in 1962 where they raised their three children.

Shirley took correspondence classes and night classes to complete her college degree in 1961. Her teaching career began when there was an unexpected opening just before school started in the fall.  Shirley was recommended for the position and got the job as a first-grade teacher.  Later she taught first and second grade at Bracewell, Colorado and then in the Windsor district, before returning to Eaton Elementary to teach first grade. Along the way she earned her Master’s degree in Early Childhood from the University of Northern Colorado.  She retired from teaching after 35 years.

Shirley moved to Greensboro, Georgia in the spring of 2020 to be closer to her daughter’s family.  She had many friends and was active in the social life at The Glen, a retirement community where she lived until her death.

Shirley was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greeley, Colorado and heavily involved in the church activities and women’s groups.  She was also active in The EHS Gold Association, a retired teacher’s group WCSPERA, and the Shirley Club.

Shirley is survived by daughter Karol Cline and husband Mike of Greensboro, Georgia, their daughters Annie Parr (Andrew) and Molly Weeks (Landon), and the lights of her life, her three great granddaughters:  Anna Weeks, Sophie Weeks, and Ansleigh Parr.  She was preceded in death by her husband Donald (Bud), daughter Kathy and son Jeff, parents, and six siblings.

Arrangements are being made for a memorial service in Greeley, Colorado at a later date.  Memorials may be sent to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1865 14th Avenue, Greeley, Colorado 80631.
