Samuel "Sam" Marshall Obituary

Samuel Hawkins “Sam” Marshall, beloved husband, father and grandfather, of Greensboro, GA, died Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, GA after a long and valiant fight with metastatic colon cancer. He was 71. Sam was born on December 11, 1949 in Albany, GA, the son of the late Charles Mitchell Marshall and Shirley Dean Gibbs Marshall. He graduated from Athens High School in 1968 and continued his education at the University of Georgia. When he left the University of Georgia he proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War as a navy corpsman. While in the Navy, he received his LPN license and during his time in the Navy reserves he worked in Beaufort, SC as a nurse at the Naval Hospital. His working career continued at Habersham County Medical Center as an ER nurse and the Fieldale Chicken Plant as the Occupational Health Nurse. In 1991 he moved to Greensboro, GA and on February 14, 1993 he married the former Meg Boswell of Greensboro, GA. From 1991 until 1996 he worked as a nurse at Minnie G. Boswell Hospital in the ER. For many years after that he worked for Dr. Southerland. His career continued at Willow Run and later Adult Day Care before he retired. He was very involved in the community and loved playing Santa Claus. Sam was a colorful individual who certainly was passionate for the interests he had in collecting and selling old cars and antiquing. He loved to talk about his unusual collection of antiques and other historical items. He rambled all over Georgia especially in the mountains as a picker looking for antiques and old cars, but family always came first for whom he enjoyed cooking. He was a member of Greensboro First Presbyterian Church and later Shiloh Baptist Church where he helped to get it reorganized.

Survivors include his wife, Meg Marshall of Greensboro, GA; children, Charles Mitchell Marshall (Dorinda) of Alto, GA, Deanna Marshall Blount (Jesse) of Irwinton, GA, Lucy Marshall Hook (David) of Washington, GA, Andrew Charles Samuel Marshall of Greensboro, GA; brothers, Robert “Arthur” Gibbs (Beth), William Mitchell “Mitch” Marshall (Marilynne); mother and father-in-law, Judy and Andrew Boswell; grandchildren, Landen, Carah and Tylar Marshall, Holly Blount and Nora Hook; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
