Samuel H. "Sam" Hollis, Jr

Samuel H. “Sam” Hollis, Jr., 84, prominent Sparta, Georgia businessman died Sunday, November 27, 2005 at his residence following an extended illness. He was born in Sparta, GA on April 4, 1921, the son of the late Samuel Howard Hollis Sr. and Caroline Harris Hollis. He spent most of his childhood in Sparta. He graduated from Griffin High School and later attended and graduated from Draughns Business School in Atlanta, GA. He was given his first job at the bank in Siloam, GA. This is where he met and married Katherine Ward. The bank was moved from Siloam to Sparta in 1944 while Mr. Hamp Dolvin was president and became the Bank of Hancock County. Later, Mr. Hollis became president of the Bank of Hancock County. He was an active member of the Sparta Presbyterian Church and his favorite pastimes included farming, hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Ward Hollis, of Sparta, GA; three daughters, Katherine H. Beall of Tybee Island, GA, Sarah Greene and husband Jeff Sanchez of Athens, GA and Caroline Baker and husband Jim of Milledgeville, GA; a son, Sam Hollis III of Sparta, GA; his grandchildren, Eugene Beall and wife Camile, Harris Beall, Katherine Beall Dean and husband Zack, Rebecca Greene Sartor and husband Robert, Elizabeth Greene Peterson and husband Hugh, James Baker, John Baker, David Baker, Samuel Hollis IV, Hilary Hollis and Tom Hollis; his great grandchildren, Matthew Baker, William Sartor, Caroline Sartor, Sarah Jane Peterson and Katherine Peterson. Mr. Hollis had a wide circle of friends who loved and admired him. Cryptside Services will be held Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Sparta City Cemetery with Rev. Reggie Haslett officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Sam Hollis IV, Jim Baker, John Baker, David Baker, Bob Sartor, Hugh Peterson, Tom Hollis, Eugene Beall and Harris Beall. The family requests that memorials be made to the Sparta Presbyterian Church or John Hancock Academy, Linton Road, Sparta, GA 31087.
