Ruth Thurmond

Ruth Thurmond of Union Point, GA was born in Greensboro, Georgia on January 5, 1952. She passed away on September 12, 2022 at Morgan Medical Center in Madison, Georgia.  She was 70 years old. 

Ruth was a loving mother and homemaker for most of her adult life.  In the 1980’s she worked in the cafeteria at the Greene-Taliaferro Comprehensive High School in Greensboro, where she was affectionately known as “Ms. Ruth” by staff and students.  She later worked at several factories in the Greensboro area before retiring. 

Ruth is preceded in death by her father and mother, Pope and Bertha Thurmond, her brothers Billy and Jimmy Thurmond and sisters Judy Thurmond and Geneva O’Neal, her nieces Beth and Mandy Hewitt, nephew Quentin Hewitt, and great grandchildren Jessica and Judah.  

She is survived by her sister, Sonia Garner, her five children, Robert Burke, Richard Burke, Benjamin Burke, April Burke, James Burke, and granddaughter Katie Collier (whom she raised since birth) and many other grandchildren. 

Ruth will be laid to rest at the Greenview Cemetery in Greensboro, Georgia.  The family asks that donations be made in her name to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the American Diabetes Association.  McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
