Rodney Maurice Mitchell of Greensboro, Ga passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, Ga at the age of 71. Born July 25, 1949 he was the son of the late Sammie Maurice Mitchell and Melba Rogers Mitchell. Rodney attended Rabun Gap Elementary in Dillard, Ga and graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, Ga in 1968. After high school he was called to serve his country in the United States Army in Vietnam from August of 1969 until May of 1972 obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He was honorably discharged and started his telephone career with Southern Bell in 1973 as a Service Technician and changed to a Facility Technician in 1988. His career spanned 38 years with Southern Bell, BellSouth and later AT&T.
Rodney was happiest when he was helping others. One of his favorite activities was working with grammar schools educating them on how telephones work and demonstrating pole climbing. He was a longtime member of the Telephone Pioneers, a volunteer organization, and served as President of the Macon Chapter from 1992 until 1993. He was an avid baseball and softball player serving as President of Vine Ingle Little League in 1987. He also served on the Board of Directors of Vine Ingle for 20 years. Working with Habitat for Humanity alongside President Jimmy Carter, he helped build 10 houses in Washington, D.C. over a period of 4 days. Rodney and his beloved partner Mary were founding members of the Macon Shag Club where they enjoyed many wonderful years dancing together.
After retirement he relocated to Greensboro, Ga and worked for Reynolds National Golf Course. He had a passion for golf his entire life and enjoyed meeting, greeting, and providing excellent customer service to all members and guests that played at Reynolds. He would always enthusiastically say, “Thank you for playing The National!”
Survivors include his longtime partner, Mary Barnes of Greensboro, Ga; sons: Brandon Mitchell (Stephanie), Cameron Mitchell (Kelly) and Stephen Mitchell; grandchildren: Alyssa Adkins, Alexus Luciano, Alayna Mitchell, Alavia Mitchell, Blane Mitchell, Evan Mitchell and Lilly Mitchell; sister, Selenda Lozano (Chuck); and several nieces.
It was Rodney’s wishes not to have a service.
