Robert "Bud" Euel Thornton, Sr.

    Robert Euel “Bud” Thornton, Sr., 91, of Union Point, GA passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.  Bud was born December 19, 1931 to William C. “Peachy” and Addie Love Mathis Thornton of Union Point.  He enlisted in the United States Army in 1951 and served for 3 years as a Private E-2 with 1 1/2 years overseas earning Good Conduct, Combat Infantry, National Defense Service, United Nations Service, Army Occupational and Korean Service medals along with one Bronze Star. Following his military service he married the former Betty Ann Bryant on July 2, 1955.  After his military service he was mainly employed as a truck driver. Employers included Alvin Reese, Stewart/Lawrence Oil Co., Standard Coffee Co., J & M Trucking and Callaway Funeral Home as an assistant. He later retired from Greene County as the landfill attendant and equipment operator.  After retiring he ended his working years as a bus driver with Greene County Schools. Bud was a faithful member of Bethesda Baptist Church where he served in numerous capacities and also headed the cemetery committee. 
    Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty Ann Bryant,  two brothers, Henry C. “Hank” Thornton and Thomas A. “Alec” Thornton and a sister, Anne T. Hogan. Survivors include his 6 children, Robert E. “Buddy” Thornton, Jr. (Rose) of Winterville, GA, William A. “Tony” Thornton, (Beth) of Carlton, GA, Sanford “Sandy” Thornton (Debbie) of Woodville, GA, James “Jimmy” Thornton (Kathy) of Union Point, GA, Lovette Lombard (Byron) of Greensboro, GA and Paul “Bodie” Thornton of Union Point, GA; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    Graveside Services with military honors will be held Sunday, April 2, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery, 1560 Bethesda Church Road, Union Point, GA 30669 with Rev. Lem Clark and Rev. Bruce Lovin officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Byron Lombard, Ryan Lombard, JT Thornton, Cole Thornton,  Eli Wilkes, Kenny Futrelle and Mike Herrington.  The family will receive friends Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church.  McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
