Robert Sylvester Scullen, age 85, of Greensboro, GA, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2025. Born on October 27, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, to Hugh Scullen and Helen Scullen, née Boland. He was educated by the Jesuits at the University of Detroit during his high school and collegiate years. He earned his Master's degree from the University of Southern California. He was awarded a PhD by the University of Michigan. During his academic career, he was named Engineering student of the year and inducted into Sigma Gamma Tau Honor Society.
After a long career in aerospace and mechanical engineering, Bob retired in 2001 from Electronic Data Systems. In 2006, Bob and Bette relocated to Lake Oconee in Greensboro, GA. He was a member of Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, and the Reynolds Golf Community. His favorite activities included playing golf, enjoying fine scotch, spending time with his many cats and recounting their funny adventures, and watching British comedies. He was known for his dry and sharp humor as well as becoming a fine “Southern” gentleman who doted on Bette. One of his proudest accomplishments was winning the Reynolds MGA Master Cup Golf Tournament.
Survivors include his wife, Bette Scullen of Greensboro; daughters from his first marriage to the late Norma Jeanne Petix, Mary Ellen Scullen (Andrew Kulemeka) of College Park, Maryland, Stephanie Trombly (William) of Thompsonville, Michigan, and Lynn Gray (David) of Vian, Oklahoma; step-daughters Jennifer Zauel, Susan Zauel, Elizabeth “Biz” Wallace (John); stepson Rudy (Kristin) Zauel; his brother, Peter Scullen (Kathleen); grandchildren, Moyenda and Chikondi Kulemeka; many step-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved cat, Rocky. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Hugh Joseph Scullen, Jr. and Jack Scullen, his stepdaughter Amy Zauel, and his grandson Owen Kulemeka.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, 6341 Lake Oconee Parkway, Greensboro, Georgia 30642, with Father Adam Blatt officiating, on Monday, May 12, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow at the church in the Sacred Heart Social Hall. Robert will be laid to rest at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 25800 West 10 Mile Road, Southfield, Michigan 48033. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
