Phillips Irvan, aged 83, of Eatonton, Georgia passed away peacefully on July 6th at his home in Great Waters, Reynolds at Lake Oconee.
Bob is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy Arnold Irvan, his two sons, Joshua (Sue), Jeffrey (Heather) and two granddaughters, Melissa and Amanda. He is also survived by his brother, Joel (Pat) and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister Lisa.
After two years at University of Michigan, Bob dropped out and drove from Detroit to California with two buddies in a 1928 Model A Ford. They each had about $40.00 in their pockets. Ninety days working on an assembly line convinced Bob of the value of education and he graduated with a B.S. from Wayne State University. After two years in the army he joined the insurance world and obtained a M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. While working in the insurance field he became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and also a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. He was able to travel the world through his job as Chief Actuary and CFO.
Bob enjoyed retirement. He had a love/hate relationship with golf and bridge, but a pure and abiding love of his family, of his books, of his music, and of his dogs.
There will be a private family service to celebrate Bob’s life. For those who wish to pay tribute to Bob, donations can be made to the Robert and Nancy Irvan Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics, Wayne State University, P.O.
