Richard Doster Newsom, Sr

Richard Doster Newsom, Sr., age 78, of Union Point, Georgia, died Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Saint Joseph''s at East Georgia in Greensboro. Richard was a lifelong resident of Greene County and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point. For a number of years he served as a deacon, the brotherhood director and at one time taught Sunday school. He was born on December 10, 1931 the son of the late Robert Joel Newsom, Sr. and Irene Doster Newsom. Richard graduated from Union Point High School and on June 28, 1964 he married Nancy Jo Dowdy. For forty-seven years, from 1950 to 1997, he worked for the Georgia Railroad which later became CSX as Depot Agent and from 2001 until November of 2008 he worked for the Union Point Housing Authority. He was a former County Commissioner for District 2 and was a former member of the Union Point City Council. His hobbies were feeding the birds and collecting trains. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his care for others and, most important, his love for his family.

Survivors include his wife of nearly forty-six years, Nancy Dowdy Newsom, of Union Point; a daughter Sally Adams (Stacy) of the Liberty Community; two sons, Richard "Ricky" Doster Newsom Jr. (Becky) of Greensboro, and Joe Newsom (Kathy) of Union Point; a niece, Kay Wimberly; a nephew, Giles Bailey, many other relatives and friends, and his beloved dog, Holly that he affectionately called his little girl. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert "Bob" Joel Newsom, Jr. and a sister, Ella Newsom Bailey.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 206 Thornton Street, Union Point, GA 30669 with Dr. David Key and Dr. Robert L. Whitmire officiating. Interment will follow at Wisteria Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Giles Bailey, Horace Wimberly, Larry Moore, Paul Jackson, Ron Lee, Gene Lindsey, Mark Higdon and Dee Lindsey. Honorary pallbearers are his former co-workers at CSX, Wright Parrott, W. H. Rhodes Jr., Wayne Usry and Charles Copelan. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. Monday night at Callaway Funeral Home.
