After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, Richard Hewatt McCullough of Greensboro, GA, peacefully passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his family.
Richard was born on July 3, 1941, in LaFayette, GA to Grayson and Irma Hewatt McCullough. He spent his childhood in the Summerville, GA area. After graduating from LaFayette High School and Berry College, he joined the United States Army and served as a Radio Relay and Carrier Attendant in Okinawa. Following his military service, Richard began his 31-year career teaching Industrial Arts at Gordon, Towers, and Lithonia High Schools, as well as Salem Middle School in DeKalb County, GA.
Upon retiring, Richard was never one to sit still. He continued to enjoy finding treasures at estate sales, antique shows, and flea markets in the Atlanta, Athens and Lake Oconee/Greensboro, GA area. He also loved sharing his treasures and spending time with his four grandchildren, who lovingly called him Papa.
Richard is survived by his wife Ruth; children Tony (Christine) Alvarez and Cindy (David) Grippando; grandchildren Tyler and Sarah Alvarez, Josh Bailey, and Catherine Grippando; sister Sylvia Cordle; and nieces Rachel (Randy) Ragland and Sylvia Lee (Michael) Keziah. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law, John Rohret and David Cordle, and grandson Aiden Alvarez.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, located at 6341 Lake Oconee Parkway, Greensboro, GA 30642, with Father Adam Blatt officiating. The family will receive friends in the church’s social hall following the Funeral Mass. Interment will follow on August 22, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, GA 30114.
The family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the Monsignor Lopez Scholarship at St. Pius X High School, 2674 Johnson Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30345, or to Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church Building Fund, 6341 Lake Oconee Parkway, Greensboro, GA 30642.
