Rev. James Lawrence Griffith, age 90, of Athens, TN, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Parkside Nursing Home in Rossville, GA. Born in Philomath on December 28, 1928, he was the son of the late Sanders George Griffith and Maude Alice Sisson Griffith. He graduated from Wilkes County High School. On June 30, 1952 he married the former Alice Lankford of the Bairdstown Community in Oglethorpe County. He was the founding pastor of Victory Baptist Church in Washington, GA serving from 1965 to 1972 and also was the pastor for a number of other churches including Tabernacle Baptist Church in Abingdon, VA and Calvary Baptist Church in Athens, GA. He was a skilled carpenter by trade and for eight years was a security guard for the University of Georgia. He returned to Athens, TN to live close to his daughter and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Athens, TN.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Osborne and husband Jerry of Athens, TN; son, Tim Griffith of Lawrenceville, GA; daughter, Sandra Elkins and husband Jerry of Clarksville, GA; grandchildren, Cindy, Jody, Dwaine, and Jennifer; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Griffith on May 21, 2019 and his brothers, Melvin Griffith and Virgil Griffith.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at McCommons Chapel, 109 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Darrell Roth and Dr. Jimmy Chapman officiating. Interment will follow in the Bairds Baptist Church Cemetery, 42 Bairdstown Loop, Union Point, GA. Serving as pallbearers are Pete Griffith, Danny Disharoon, Jerry Elkins, Jerry Caldwell, Ernie Guthrie and Jimmy Griffith. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time for the service at the funeral home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
