Rev. Durell Rice, age 96, of Watkinsville, GA passed away Sunday, October 31, 2021 at his residence. Durell was born in Woodstock, GA on October 23, 1925, the son of the late Ada Lovinggood Rice and Grover Cleveland Rice. He was a graduate of Powder Springs High School and Tennessee Temple Bible College where he earned a bachelor’s degree. On August 31, 1946, he married the former Helen Aycock in Watkinsville, GA. Until 1987 he was the production coordinator for Westinghouse in Athens. For 4 years he was the minister of Freeman Creek Baptist Church in Watkinsville, GA and the minister of New Hope Baptist Church in Greshamville for 14 years. At the time of his death, he was a member of Freeman Creek Baptist Church. Rev. Rice was easygoing and soft spoken ministering to many families over his lifetime.
Survivors include two daughters, Ann Rice of Watkinsville, GA and Miriam Swain and husband Roy of Smyrna, GA; a son, David Rice and wife Shelley of Athens, GA; 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Rice; two sons, Philip Rice and Len Rice; and siblings, James Lewis Rice, Teddy O’Neal Rice, Leroy Rice, G. C. Rice, Clara Belle Rice and Virginia Chandler.
Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Farmington Cemetery, 2890 Old Farmington Road, Watkinsville, GA 30677 with Rev. Ken Jennings and Rev. Carlos Sibley officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at McCommons Funeral Home.
