Ray Marchman Obituary

Ray Aiken Marchman entered his eternal home on Sunday, July 27, 2025. While he was a long time resident of Greene County, he spent his last few years in Rome, GA in order to be closer to his family. While he found a way to be content in his new home, his heart remained in Greene County.

Ray was born in Veazey, GA on November 22, 1927.  He frequently told stories about his life in that community. According to him, he had an idyllic childhood. He graduated from Greensboro High School in 1945. According to a description in his annual, “A cheerful disposition and a ready smile have won him many friends.” This remained true throughout his lifetime. He attended Berry College for one year but chose to enlist in the army instead of returning for another year. His time in the army was spent as a discharge clerk, efficiently completing discharge orders to help soldiers returning from the war to be reunited with  their families.

He worked in the trucking industry for many years in the Atlanta area. In 1967, he chose to move his family to Greensboro, Ga where he bought and ran Greensboro Mercantile. In 1976, he was elected to the office of Greene County Clerk of Superior Court. He remained there for 16 years. He retired in December, 1992. During his tenure, he served a term  as the President of the County Officers Association of Georgia. He served as the Chairman of the Greene County Commissioners for one term. After his retirement he was active in the Retired Clerks Association of Georgia. Ray was a member of First Baptist Church of Greensboro for many years. He sang in the choir, served as a deacon, taught Sunday School and worked in Awana. He truly loved the people of First Baptist Church and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He also had a card ministry sending birthday cards out daily to everyone he knew.

Ray loved growing vegetables in his garden and sharing them with friends. As well as growing vegetables, he could  freeze, can and cook with the best of them. He loved cooking for people and spent many years cooking Wednesday night suppers at First Baptist Church of Greensboro. He was known for his chicken and dumplings and his Thanksgiving feasts that were all made from scratch.  His Brunswick Stew was the star of the Marchman family reunions.

Ray spent many years camping with his family and friends. He frequently spoke of a cross country camping trip that he, his wife, Margaret, and his sister, Willene, and her husband, Dave took in 1998. He and his wife also enjoyed several international trips as well.

Ray is predeceased by his parents, Hal Marchman and Flossie Taylor Marchman; his beloved wife of 56 years, Margaret Amerson Marchman; his siblings and their spouses, Hal Marchman Jr.(Mary); Percy Marchman(Vicki); Willene Lockery(Dave); and Naomi Credille(Bill).

He is survived by his five children: Emily Marchman; Andy Marchman (Marcia); Charles Marchman (Binh); Dan Marchman (Tina); Darryl Marchman (Katie) and a dearly loved family friend, Dianne Guy.  Ray is also survived by his grandchildren; Britt Marchman (Kate), Kyle Marchman, Sean Marchman (Ruth), Brandon Murray, Randall Murray, Tiffany Harbison (Justin), Courtney Marchman, Brianna Marchman, Blake Marchman, Luna Marchman, Noah Marchman and Maggie Marchman. In addition, there are three great-grandchildren; John Marchman, Morgana Marchman and Maldwyn Marchman.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Riverwood Senior Living, Tapestry Hospice and his private sitters, Ramonica Ware and Larissa Rowland for the excellent care they provided.
