Paul Pleak Obituary

Paul Amos Pleak of Eatonton, Georgia, formerly of Marietta and Blairsville, Georgia, died Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at his residence at the age of 98.  Born August 9, 1924, in Decatur County, Indiana, and raised in and around Greensburg and Indianapolis, Indiana, he was the son of the late Gepford and Dorothy Amos Pleak, of Decatur County, Indiana, and later of Marietta and Smyrna, Georgia.

Paul was in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was in training as a radio operator when the war ended. He met the love of his life, Ruth Sisk, while working at the Atlanta VA hospital, and they married in 1946. He attended Georgia Tech and received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1950. He began his career at the Lockheed Georgia plant in 1951 and happily built airplanes for 35 years until his retirement in 1986. He and Ruth raised their family in Smyrna and Marietta and eventually retired to Blairsville in the North Georgia mountains. They loved living in the mountains until Ruth’s declining health dictated a move back to Marietta and assisted living for the last two years of her life.

P. A., as he was known to all the family, loved golf and card playing of all types. He was an avid sports fan, especially of Georgia Tech sports. He always knew the players and the records of the teams for all sports and especially how the professionals who had played at Tech were doing on the PGA tour each week.

In 2017, after Ruth’s death in 2016, he moved to Eatonton to live with his daughter Peggy. He had retired from golf by then but was happy following sports and keeping up with world events through the newspaper and TV. He always amazed people he met by his wit and mental acuity for a person of his age.

Paul is survived by his daughter Cathy and her husband Chris Brown, his daughter Peggy and her husband Keith Cooley, and his son David and his wife Susan Pleak. He also leaves six grandchildren: Matthew Brown (Christy), Stephen Brown (Deanna), Lara Cooley, Bryan Cooley (Danielle), Andrew Pleak, and Benjamin Pleak (Abby), as well as six great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Ellie, Evan, and Alexander Brown; and Logan and Dylan Cooley.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at noon, at Kennesaw Memorial Park in Marietta, Georgia. The family will receive visitors after the service at an informal meal at the Lee’s Crossing Clubhouse.
