Mike Jones Obituary

Mike Margene Jones, a cherished father and well-loved member of the Greensboro community, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2026. He was 96.  Born on August 21, 1929, in Dawson, GA, Mike was one of nine children to the late John Rider Jones and Laura Wood Jones. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force receiving an honorable discharge. In 1949, he married Martha Wickliffe in Wichita, Texas, who preceded him in death in March of 2024, after 74 years of marriage.

Mike was the devoted father of Michael Jones, Tina Howell (Tim), and Pamela Carstens (Michael). He was also a much-loved grandfather to Jennifer (Steve), Natalie (John), Anna (Josh), Laura, David (Dorothy), and Savannah; a great-grandfather to Nikki (Trenton), Bailey, Reece, Camden, Ansley, Kayla, Kristopher, Diana, Lily, Avery, and Asher; and a great-great-grandfather to Dawson.

Mike dedicated his professional life to education, believing strongly in giving back to his community, especially in this field. He served as a coach, classroom teacher, bus driver, school principal, and school superintendent of Waycross Schools until his retirement in 1983. After moving to Greene County, he became the headmaster of both Gatewood and Rutledge Academies and also served on the Greene County Board of Education and dedicated much of his time to Nathanael Greene Academy.

A longtime resident of south Georgia, Mike was a childhood friend of President Jimmy Carter and worked for him at one time. Mike enjoyed traveling around the United States and to other points of interest around the world. He was a member of the local Elks Club and Greensboro First Methodist Church and enjoyed the many community activities and cultural events offered.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his daughter, Pamela Dawson, and all of his siblings: Velma Weston, Cholie Vandevied, Mildred Newmann, Susie Smith, J. R. Jones, Hunter Jones, Robert Jones, and Don Jones.

Mike will be dearly missed, but his memory will live on through his family, who will carry on the strong values and sense of service to others instilled in them with love.
