Melvin Burwell Obituary

Melvin Blaine Burwell, age 86, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Savannah Court of Lake Oconee in Greensboro.  Mr. Burwell was born in Perrysburg, Ohio on November 26, 1927 to the late Lavern Marquardt Burwell and Melvin Blaine Burwell, Sr.  He graduated from Perrysburg High School and attended Bowling Green State University.  He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a medic during the Korean War.  On September 4, 1949 he married Doris Aileen Van Cleve.  He spent his entire working career with Libbey Owens Ford Glass Company beginning in Rossford, Ohio and attaining executive positions in Laurinburg, NC, Clinton, NC and retiring in 1992 as plant manager in Rossford, OH.  He and his wife retired to Indiantown, Florida where they remained nearly twenty years until recently moving to Greene County to be closer to family.  His many interests included golf, bowling, community theater and chorus, church choir, reading and he amassed a very comprehensive collection of big band music.  He was also a Civil War and history enthusiast and a member of the Toastmasters and the Elk's Club.

In addition to his wife Doris Burwell of Greensboro, GA, he is survived by a daughter, Lynn Burwell Artz and husband Duane of Greensboro, GA; son Douglas Burwell and wife Marcia of Perrysburg, OH; and son Steven Burwell and wife Morissa of Marietta, GA.  Melvin is also survived by a brother, James Burwell of Surprise, AZ, and a sister Patrice Burwell of Melbourne, FL.  He has six grandchildren, Carrie Artz Selvey and husband Mike, Kristi Artz Slappey and husband Gordon, Jacquelyn Burwell Tiberio and husband Rob, Laura Burwell Failor and husband Rob, Melanie Burwell and Jason Burwell.  He also has six great grandchildren, Jean Slappey, Emma Slappey, Trenton Selvey, Colton Selvey, Hayden Tiberio and Mia Tiberio.  He was preceded in death by grandson, Jeremy Burwell, son of Steven and Morissa.
