Dr. Mason Paul Thompson, age 77, of Augusta, GA passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family. Born on August 14, 1947, in Greensboro, GA, he was the son of the late Andrew Dean Thompson, Sr. and Henrietta Pauline White Thompson. Mason graduated from Greensboro High in 1965, where he received the Roy Burke Scholarship and the C. Weldon Smith Scholarship. He was always very proud of his hometown of Greensboro, and credited future successes in life to having grown up in such a caring and loving community. Mason graduated from the University of GA in 1969 and the Medical College of GA in 1973; he completed his Postdoctoral Residency in 1976 at Spartanburg, SC General Hospital. On February 1, 1975, he married Nancy Neal Carter of Erlanger, Ky. Mason spent the majority of his career in Augusta, GA., as an employee of the Medical College of GA. He served as a Family Practitioner, Gerontologist, Professor, Dean for Student Affairs, Dean of Admissions and Professor Emeritus, retiring in 2007.
Dr. Thompson was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and the Rotary Club; Director of National Residency Matching Program; Founder of the White Coat Ceremony for humanism in medicine; Founder of First Annual Research Assembly for Family Medicine; President, MCG Faculty Senate; President , MCG, School of Alumni Assoc.; Chair, Southern Group on Student Affairs; and First Vice-President, MCG Foundation. In 2017, Mason received the MCG Alumni School of Medicine Award for Loyalty. In his spare time Mason enjoyed tennis and photography.
In addition to his wife of fifty years, Nancy Thompson, survivors include his son, Mason Scott “Scott” Thompson and wife Sophia Elizabeth “Sophie” Kelly of Arlington, VA; grandchildren, Ziyel Kelly Thompson and Cenna Elizabeth Thompson; goddaughter, Portia Prescott Radocha of Winter Haven, FL. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Alice Ruth “Cissie” Thompson Victor; William Mikel Thompson, and Andrew Dean Thompson, Jr.
A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at 11:30 am at Greenview Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, Georgia 30642 with retired Naval Chaplain George Tumlin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall at the First Baptist Church, 203 S. Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642.
