Obituary

Mary Ann Jones, age 86, of Crawfordville, Georgia, died on March 8, 2023, at home, surrounded by her family.  Mary Ann was born in Sandersville, Georgia, on October 4, 1936, to the late John Frank and Annabelle (Lowe) Rogers.  Her father died when she was a toddler, her mother worked in the mill in Union Point to support her and her four siblings.  She attended Union Point schools and graduated in 1956.  Mary Ann was a star basketball player throughout her high school years and a passionate reader; the school librarian would hold all new books for her to view before anyone else saw them. After graduation, she and Bobby were married on July 27, 1956, and she began working at General Times in Athens.  Then Bobby joined the Air Force and she supported and enhanced his 21-year military career as they traveled from Louisiana, England, Germany, Florida, Georgia, and Ohio, raising one daughter and two sons.   Mary Ann’s strong character was molded during these years.  She was an excellent mother, and when necessary played the role of a dual parent - due to Bobby serving in Vietnam, and later in Iran.   Due to these experiences, Mary Ann started the first “spouse support group” to help new and existing Air Force wives while their husbands were deployed.  Today this program is called “Key Spouses”.  Mary Ann and Bobby retired in Warner Robins, GA, where she worked for Robins Federal Credit union, and all three of their children completed high school there.

In 1999 they moved back to their hometown area of Crawfordville, to retire.  But she did not slow down, she worked in the Sunshine House for over ten years (where she would travel to large cities and solicit assistance for this rural community in the way of clothes, household goods, and furniture). She was the secretary of, “Stop The Landfill” in which they were successful in stopping a Landfill plan that would have compromised the Ogeechee River.  She organized the Taliaferro County Labor Day fair for two years.  She worked part-time as an abstractor for the clerk of the court for over three years. She was a member, of the Board of Register in Taliaferro County.  She is a lifetime member of the Taliaferro County Historical Society and served as Vice President for two terms. Mary Ann was a member of the Taliaferro County Family Connections for many years.  She was appointed by the Mayor as the Housing Authority for the City of Crawfordville but had to resign because of health issues. Mary became a member of (Woodman of the World), Mr. T.C. Harrington was president of this district, and Mary Ann was VP.  In her position, she was instrumental in providing Woodman flags and poles for nonprofit organizations in Crawfordville, she did all of this while also supporting and loving each of her grandchildren, attending their gym meets, and ball games until her health failed.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Bobby Wayne Jones, their daughter Shawnee Lynn (Kerry) Axtell, and two sons, Barry Wayne (Kimberly) Jones and Todd Wayne (Amanda) Jones, as well as seven grandchildren (Cody, Ashleigh, Casey, Leanna, Tyler, Courtney, and Drake, as well as two great-grandchildren (Brett and Khloe).   She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings (Roy Rogers, Betty (Mealor) Rogers, Al Rogers, and Johnnie (Ashmore) Rogers.)  On Saturday, March 11, 2023 Mary Ann’s family has organized a viewing at 10:00 am, and a memorial service for her life at 11:00 a.m., to be held at Crawfordville Baptist Church, Crawfordville, GA, after which there will be a graveside service at Powelton Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers are Tyler Jones, Cody Simpson, Drake Jones, John Mealer, Casey Lipscomb and Rick Hubert.

The family requests that any memorials be made to Crawfordville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Donna Taylor P. O. Box 238, Crawfordville, GA 30631 or Powelton Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Jackie Butts, 4316 Sparta Road, Crawfordville, GA 30631. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
