Mary Durham Caldwell died peacefully on February 21, 2021 one day before her 93rd birthday. Born in Greensboro to Mattie Leona Bethea and Dr. Columbus Joseph “Doc” Durham, she lived nearly all her life in Greene County. Known for her love and steadfast support of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, “Miss Mary” attended both Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville and the University of Georgia. She married Robert Russell Caldwell on March 6, 1949 and raised two generations in her home. “Memom” was an avid fan of UGA football, loved playing bridge and watching old westerns. She possessed a sharp wit and an unrelenting ability to tell the truth. She unselfishly shared with others and taught her children and grandchildren to be independent and to always keep learning.
She is preceded in death by her husband and parents and is survived by her daughters, Roxanne Caldwell Egan of Greensboro, GA and Sharon Caldwell Blackwood (Michael E. Blackwood) of Duluth, GA; three grandchildren: Stuart Alan Egan (Laura L. Laxton) of Winston-Salem, NC, Ashley Margaret Blackwood Kussman (Erich Hans–William Kussman) of Princeton Junction, NJ, and Stephanie Lorraine Blackwood of Brooklyn, NY; four great-children: McKenzie Elizabeth Laxton Egan, Alexis Ruth Russo, Malcolm Bennett Laxton Egan, and Gabriel Durham Russo; and two brothers: Dr. Robert Harris Durham, Sr. and Joseph Vinson Durham both of Greensboro.
A family graveside service will be officiated by Erich Hans–William Kussman, husband of her granddaughter on Wednesday, February 24th at 3:00pm. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad St., Greensboro, GA, (706) 453-2626, is in charge of arrangements. Visit us at www.mccommonsfuneralhome.com to sign the online guest register.
