Martha Eloise Gandy Cawthon, of Greensboro, GA died on March, 19, 2022, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro, GA, at the age of 95. Born in Cairo, GA on May 23, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Curtis Irwin Gandy and Lois Hughes Gandy. Eloise graduated from Cairo High School and received her Bachelor’s degree from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, GA and that is where she met her husband, John Wilbur Cawthon, Jr. They married May 2, 1947 and made their home in Greensboro, GA. After moving to Greensboro, she taught school in the fourth grade at Greensboro Elementary. She later became secretary for Kimber Farms and then worked as Medical Records Librarian for Minnie G. Boswell Hospital. She retired from Greene County Department of Family and Children Services in Greensboro, GA as Accounting Technician. After retirement she helped her son, Ken Cawthon at Farmers Feed and Seed taking care of the flowers and became the “Candy Lady” during the holidays. Eloise and her husband John were loyal Georgia Bulldog fans and attended every home game, sitting in the same seat for 58 years, and also enjoyed traveling to many out-of-town games as well as visits to places such as Alaska and Hawaii and spending time at their cabin on the Hiwassee River in North Carolina. She dearly loved her family and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Eloise was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro where she was the first female Administrative Board Chair and a church office volunteer. One thing that she was proud of was being able to work at Farmers Feed and Seed on her 90th birthday.
Survivors include her daughter, Debra Taylor and husband Jeff of Mt. Airy, MD; three sons, John Stephen Cawthon of Greensboro, GA, Ken Cawthon and wife Kathy of Greensboro, GA and Jeff Cawthon and wife Tracy of Ellaville, GA; ten grandchildren, Matthew Taylor (Stephanie), Allison Bolling (Troy), Michelle Taylor, Jessi Flynn (Greg), Maggie Cawthon, Polly Cawthon, Kristy Cawthon, Becky Schuyler (Brad), April Anders and Ray Anders (Brandi); sixteen great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband of fifty-eight years, John Wilbur Cawthon, Jr., she was also preceded in death by her brother, Hugh Irwin Gandy.
A Celebration of her life will be held Saturday, April 2, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, North Campus, 202 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow the service at the church. Any memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 216, Greensboro, GA 30642, specified for the Community Care Fund.
