Martha G. Barrett, age 87, of Watkinsville, Georgia, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2024.
Martha was born November 29, 1936, in Oconee County to the late Early and Clara Griffeth. She graduated from Watkinsville High School in 1955, where she played basketball. She went to work right out of high school for the National Bank of Athens.
She married Robert Barrett, Sr., “Bobby” in 1959, and they were married for 52 years before Bobby died in 2011. They raised three children: Bob, Jr., Kathy and Julie. They lived many places but after moving to Conyers, this became their home, and they met many friends.
Martha went to work for C & S Bank, which later became Trust Company Bank, and then SunTrust Bank, and now Truist. She retired from SunTrust Bank (now Truist) in 1992 as assistant vice president.
She was an active member of the Friendship Class and had a deep love for Conyers First United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed her church family at Covington First United Methodist Church.
She loved to grow flowers and vegetables -- she always enjoyed having her hands in the dirt. Her home was always open to her many friends, especially her Mexican Train friends. Wherever she went, she met new friends and always loved her neighbors. Her remaining time was spent at The Glen at Lake Oconee Village.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband Bob and daughter Kathy Barrett Nieuwstraten. She is survived by son Bob Barrett, Jr., and wife Dawn of Oxford, Georgia, and daughter Julie Knox of Jackson, Georgia, grandchildren Jeremy Barrett (wife Jenesa), Jessica Brown (husband Christian), Jordan Barrett, MacKenzi Barrett, George Nieuwstraten, Emily Nieuwstraten, Alayna Harvey (husband Paden), Blake Behnke, Laci (Axel) Knox, and great-grandchildren Easton Barrett (his siblings Ava Weber and Liam Weber), Elijah Brown, Barrett Brown, and James Harvey.
