Loyd Vernon Parker, age 85, of Greensboro, Georgia, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021 at his residence. A native of Greensboro, he was born March 18, 1936 the youngest of twelve children of the late James Elisha Parker and Almedia Hubbard Parker. In 1954 Vernon graduated from Greensboro High School where he was the Salutatorian. During his high school career he was a member of the Beta Club, was the district mile champion in track and played varsity football. On September 7, 1956 he married the former Diane Gillen in Camden County. He served his country in the United States Army receiving an honorable discharge in 1961. He served with the 101st and 11th Airborne Divisions. For a number of years he worked for Irby Thompson as a watchmaker. Vernon was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro and Hamp’s Bible Class. He was also a devoted member of the San Marino Lodge No. 34, F & AM in Greensboro, GA where he served as Past Master.
In addition to his wife of sixty-five years, Diane Parker of Greensboro, GA, he is survived by two sons, Patrick Parker of Cordele, GA and Paul Parker of Greensboro, GA; daughter, Teresa Diane Parker Simpson of Greensboro, GA; grandchildren: Patrick Robert Parker, Casie Tran Darley, Candice Tran Brake, Tiffany Bridges, Chaney Sagle, Wendy Diane Simpson, Melissa Jean Gray, Anna Nichole Salster, Dylan Richard Lederer, Desi’Rae Nichole Lederer, and James Daniel Parker. He was preceded in death by his son, Wade Parker; grandson, Jeremy Michael Simpson; and all of his siblings: Dessa Burt, Steed Parker, Vertrie Webb, James Parker, Carl Parker, Dora Garner, Cleveland Parker, Bobby Parker, Gene Parker, Frances Ussery and Celeste Johnson.
Funeral Services will be held, Thursday, October 21, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 203 S. Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Rev. Mark Jones and Rev. Robert Robinson officiating, Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time for the service at the church. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow in the Greenview Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, Georgia 30642. The family will also receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at McCommons Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers are Patrick Robert Parker, James Daniel Parker, Hal Akins, Jonathan Akins, and Mike Simpson. Members of Hamp’s Sunday School Class and the San Marino Lodge will serve as honorary pallbearers.
