Lois Cheves Obituary

Lois Rebecca Corry Cheves, age 86, of Union Point, Georgia, died on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at her residence, Harbec, in Union Point, Georgia. A lifelong resident of Union Point and daughter of the late Robert Crawford Corry and Cornelia Frances Cary Corry, Lois was born on March 11, 1925, at the Corry home place in Union Point, Georgia. She graduated from Union Point High School in 1942, and Georgia State College for Women in 1946. She was a member of the first graduating class with a major in Distributive Education and served as president of the Distributive Education Club. She worked as assistant buyer for Davison''s (Macy''s) in Atlanta and Augusta from 1947 to 1950. Entering the University of Georgia in 1964, she earned a degree in Elementary Education and taught first grade in Union Point from 1964 until 1969. In 1969 she was elected to the original faculty at Nathanael Greene Academy where she taught first grade thru 2004. She was a Teacher of the Year and the class of 1981 dedicated the yearbook to her, the only elementary teacher to be so honored. Upon her retirement the Elementary Building Wing was named the Lois Corry Cheves Building. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Union Point, she was elected the first woman deacon on July 23, 1978 and the first woman elder on June 3, 1984. She taught Sunday School many years and was president of the Women of the Church. She later transferred to Lakeside Church on Lake Oconee with her children and grandchildren. A member of the Union Point Garden Club she served as president. She was a member of the Garden Club of Georgia. One of her favorite organizations she belonged to was Georgia Mother''s Association of the American Mothers, Inc.

She was elected to the Alpha Theta Chapter of PSI State and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, International, to Unite Women Educators of the World. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Cheves Moye of Athens, GA; a son, Dr. Harry L. "Bo" Cheves III and wife Dr. Ruby Cheves of Union Point, GA; six grandchildren, Meagan Aldridge (Matt), Matthew Moye, Morgan (Margaret) Moye and Mallory Moye, Alex Cheves and Rebecca Cheves; one great granddaughter, Amelia Keyes Aldridge; and many other relatives and friends. She had one sister, Frances Beatrice Corry, who preceded her in death.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Lakeside Church at Lake Oconee, 5800 Lake Oconee Parkway, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Rev. Lee Ross officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Rhodes Street, Union Point, GA 30669. Serving as pallbearers are Mike McCommons, Charles Crumbley, Wade Overton, Lanier Rhodes, Bob Brooks, Joel McRay, Arlie Collins, Wayne Hurst and Bill Byce. Honorary pallbearers are all of her former students. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday night at McCommons Funeral Home.
