Lawrence Hugh Mattox, age 72, of Eatonton, GA passed away at home with his family by his side on Friday, August 18, 2023. He was born on February 3, 1951 in Jacksonville, FL to the late Fred Bothwell Mattox and Helen Montgomery Mattox. He graduated from Florida State University and received his Master’s from Webster University. Lawrence proudly served his country as a United States Air Force pilot achieving the rank of Captain. He then flew for Pan Am and Atlas Air traveling the world until his retirement in 2013. He married Karen L. Murphy on May 8, 1982 in Binghamton, NY. Lawrence enjoyed living at Lake Oconee for the last ten years doing what he loved the most; fishing, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a master gardener and part of the Oconee Master Gardeners of Eatonton.
Survivors include his wife of forty-one years, Karen Murphy Mattox of Eatonton, GA; sons, Travis J. Mattox and Tyler J. Mattox; brother, Wayne T. Mattox of Orange Park, FL; Brother-in-law David Murphy (Lisa) of Binghamton, NY, special cousins, Freddie Carter (Rosie) of Jacksonville, FL; nephews and nieces, Jesse Murphy (Virginia) of Binghamton, NY, Amanda Fountain (Kyle) of Orange Park, FL, and Tracy Warner (Matt) of Pine City, NY; great nephews and nieces, Hunter Fountain, Savanna Fountain, Mathias Warner and Macy Warner; additional relatives and many special friends including Elaine Jaworski, George and Gloria Morrell, Rebecca Parmet, and his beloved Long Shoals Crossing neighbors.
A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, 6341 Lake Oconee Parkway, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Father Adam Blatt officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. Serving as pallbearers will be the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard. The family requests any memorials be made in Lawrence’s name to the Putnam 4H/Oconee Master Gardeners, 663 Godfrey Road, Suite 101, Eatonton, GA 31024. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
