Lawrence Boyd Obituary

Lawrence “Larry” Maurice Boyd, age 70, of Greensboro, GA, formerly of Asheville, NC, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the Athens Regional Medical Center. He was born on February 4, 1940 in Oneida, New York to the late Albert Clayton Boyd and Mary Viola Hovey Boyd. He was a graduate of Oneida High School in 1957 and the State University of New York at Brockport in 1961. After graduation he married the former Sandra Gail Hardwick. He began his professional life as a teacher, first at Barnard Elementary School and then at Hover Drive School in Rochester, NY. He was most known as a manufacturer’s representative in the furniture industry from 1982 until 2007. After retiring, they moved to Greene County in August of 2009 to the Del Webb Community. He was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church in Asheville where he was a deacon, elder and sang bass in the choir; and since moving to Greensboro was a member of the Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church. His many interests included golfing, grandchildren and being quite a handyman. He was very athletic in high school playing point guard in basketball, shortstop in baseball and quarterback/linebacker in football. He also enjoyed the theater in high school and college and later became very active in the Asheville Community Theater. He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Sandra Gail Hardwick Boyd of Greensboro, GA; two sons, Ned H. Boyd and wife Jean of Logansport, IN and their children, Grace, Kay and Caroline Boyd and LtCol Darren S. Boyd USMC and wife Pamela of Oceanside, CA and their children, Emily and Samantha Boyd and grandchildren Jack and Brandon Boyd who live with their mother in Wilmington, NC; one sister, Kay Arlene Balfour of Inverness, FL, and step siblings Carol, Olivia and Judy and Albert Clayton Boyd, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL. Memorial Services will be held Monday, June 28, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lake Oconee Presbyterian Church, 113 Scott Road, Eatonton, GA 31024 with Dr. Joe King officiating. The honorary pall bearers are Maj Herbert Clayton “Sparky” Bollinger Jr., USMC, Dick Enter Jr., Jim Gray, Troy Hawkins, John Hoag, Jim Jordan, Ron Karpola, Bob LaClaire, Rob Nielsen, Chuck Peterson, Doug Sugars, Tom Tracy, and “Ghetto Garage Bunch”. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m.; and will gather after the service at the Clubhouse at Del Webb from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. His cremains will be scattered at a later date at Craggy Pinnacle near Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
