Laquita Withrow Pimm

Laquita Anne Withrow Pimm died at Athens Regional Hospital June 19, 2013. She was born on April 18, 1937 in Clanton, Alabama, the daughter of Ralph Lewis Withrow and Eunice Hilda Holley Withrow of Greensboro, Georgia.

Laquita lived life in pursuit of learning. After graduating from Greensboro High School, she attended Mercer University and the University of Georgia where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She married Harold Streibich and moved to Memphis, Tennessee where she taught at Lausanne Collegiate School while completing a degree in Education at Memphis State University. After moving to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1965, she pursued a Masters Degree in Education at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton while teaching at Pine Crest School. She became Head Mistress of the Lower School at Pine Crest and enjoyed that administrative position for 12 years. When she resigned, a wing of the school was dedicated in her honor.

Desiring a return to her Georgia roots, Laquita moved to Atlanta where she established and owned a tutorial school, The Learning Place. It was in Atlanta, through the International Educator''s Group, that she met her beloved and future husband. Laquita married Brian George Stanton Pimm of Petts Wood, Kent, England in 1986. Thus began many happy years living abroad and enjoying extensive travels through Europe and Scandinavia. Not being idle, she taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at the American College in London.

Brian died in February 1998 and Laquita returned to the United States and to familiar turf in Athens, GA. She became a professor of English at the University of Georgia. Her love of art lead to an affiliation with the Georgia Museum of Art and to an appointment on the museum''s Board of Directors. She was an enthusiastic docent at the Athens Museum as well as an advisor and docent for the Steffen Thomas Museum in Buckhead, Georgia. Socially, Laquita enjoyed the University Women''s Club, symphony, and Scrabble and book groups. She lived in Athens for 12 years.

Years of coronary problems led to Laquita''s decision to simplify her life and return to her home town of Greensboro, Georgia. She resided in the Withrow home on Bush Street until her death. She said many times that she "had come full circle". She, and the family, is grateful to her wonderful caregivers, Ethel Craig, Essie Brown, Mable Turner, Norm Parks, and Barbara Chandler.

Laquita is survived by her daughter Margaret Anne Streibich Hovel of Byron, Minnesota and her husband Dan Hovel, and two grandsons, Matthew and Chris Hovel; her sisters Linda Withrow of Atlanta, GA and Holley Withrow Renno and her husband Gene of Augusta, GA; and her brother, Ralph Lewis Withrow Jr. of Covington, GA; her English family Peter and Iris Pimm of Bakewell, Derbyshire; Monica Burdon of Essex; and Keith Pimm, his wife and children.

Visitation will be held between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. on Friday at McCommons Funeral Home. Graveside Services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Greensboro City Cemetery with Rev. Michael Hardy officiating. A reception will follow the service at the Withrow Home at 203 Bush Street, Greensboro, GA. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
