Joseph DeFilippo departed this life on September 1, 2024, after a short stay at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital. Joe was born in 1948 in the Bronx, NY. The proud son of Italian immigrants his father, Frank DeFilippo, was from Recale, Caserta, Compania, Italy and his mother, Jennie Scialdone, was from the town of Vitaluzio in the same province. In 1956 he married Marilyn Thompson, his wife of 55 years, who predeceased him in 2012. Together they made a home in Monroe, CT where Joe lived until 2021 when he moved to Greensboro, GA.
In February 1946, Joe enlisted in the US Navy where he served as an Aviation Machinists mate. He was honorably discharged in December 1947. After the service, Joe continued his education and in 1951 earned the degree of Associate in Applied Science – Mechanical Technology from SUNY Institute of Applied Arts and Science NYC. From 1952 until 1955 Joe worked for the Aerotech Corp of Greenwich, CT and from 1955 to 1964 he worked for AMF (American Machine and Foundry). Joe started working for CBS Records in 1964 as a mechanical engineer and worked his way up to Director, Design Engineering in 1977. Joe was granted a patent for his design of “Winding core for magnetic tape adapted for stacking” in 1982. Joe retired in 1994 from the then SONY Music R&D lab.
Joe loved golf, football and woodworking, spending countless hours designing and building projects for his family. He also enjoyed keeping the family history. He was predeceased by his sisters, Martha DeCamillo and Maria DeStefano
He loved to be around his family and enjoyed the company of his three children Mark (Diane), Donna Klein (Gerald), and Craig. He was grandfather to Stephen DeFilippo (Karli), Alec DeFilippo, Gerald Klein III (Kate), and Brittany Swim (Austin), and great grandfather to Joaquin DeFilippo, Lucas Swim and Gerald Klein IV. Joe also leaves behind his sisters Virginia Venturino, Geraldine Hample and brother Frank DeFilippo Jr.
Joe lived a full happy life and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
