John “Jack” Frederick Nebl of Eatonton, GA passed away Thursday, February 9, 2023 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, GA at the age of 77. He was born on September 11, 1945, in Brooklyn, NY. He was the son of the late Karol Nebl and the late Mary Anna Stimak Nebl. He grew up in Brooklyn and attended Cardinal Hayes Catholic High School. He served in the U.S. Army for five years completing a combat deployment in Vietnam and later attended Officer Candidate School and the Defense Language Institute. He earned a Political Science degree from Rutgers University and a Law degree from the Potomac School of Law.
Jack served as a Public Defender in Dekalb County from 1979 to 1983 and then entered private practice as a Criminal Defense Attorney. This year marked his 40th year in private practice proudly serving the Atlanta metropolitan area and the Lake Oconee region of Baldwin, Greene, Hancock, Jasper, Jones, Morgan, Putnam and Wilkinson Counties. In addition to his duties as an attorney, he was a part-time judge in Recorder’s Court, Dekalb County for 14 years.
Jack lived in Putnam County part time since 1987, and moved from Stone Mountain, GA to live here full time in 1994. He married Betty Jane Willis on June 8, 1991.
Jack’s passion for the outdoors started as a Boy Scout as he earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout. He was an avid outdoorsman his whole life and loved to fish and hunt. He also loved to read and spend time with his dog. He enjoyed life on the lake and was a member of the Elks Lodge No 2549 in Eatonton, GA.
Survivors include his wife, Betty “Janie” Nebl of Eatonton, GA; son Andrew John Nebl (Susan); daughter, Stacy Jane Nebl; grandsons, Aidan Rainey and Nathan Nebl; along with many, many beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Charles Nebl.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, February 13, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Alec Ward officiating at McCommons Chapel, 109 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
