John Harvey Webb Obituary

John Harvey Webb, 91, of Greensboro died August 25, 2020 at Athens Piedmont Hospital.  A native of Greene County, he was born March 30, 1929 to John William and Norene Jennings Webb of Penfield.  He grew up on the family farm and joined the U.S. Army at 17 serving 4 years in  Korea and Japan.

Harvey started Webb Construction Company in the late 1950’s building and remodeling many houses in the area.  In 1961, he began Webb Brothers Building Supply to have a local source of his building materials. He was a keen business man and was successful in all his ventures with remodeling projects continuing until the time of his death. He served on the board of directors of Central and Southern Bank for many years where he enjoyed inspecting construction projects throughout the lake area.

Many of his happiest hours were spent playing golf.  He won many trophies over the years competing in tournaments.  In recent years he had become a gardener, raising vegetables and canning them for all his family and friends, planting roses and tending to his goldfish pond. He loved his family, his church and his community often building or donating to the projects that would benefit those he loved.

Harvey is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mildred Johnson Webb; daughters, Frances Alford, Jean Oakes (Doug), sons, Allen (Rebecca) and Tim (Angie).  He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffery Lynn Webb.  He is survived by grandchildren, Leigh Herald, Candace Wooten, Doug Oakes Jr., David Oakes, Kasey Robinson, Savannah Schremmer, Ivy Cowherd, and Bradley Webb; great grandchildren, Maddox and Shelby Robinson, Emma Cowherd, Lane Schremmer, Julie and Dixie Oakes, and Alex Harwood.  He is also survived by one sister, Leona (Kitten) Huff and a special grandson, Jamie Webb.
