John Walter “Butch” Jackson, age 72, of Siloam, GA, died Sunday, May 16, 2021 at the Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Born in Union Point, GA on May 6, 1949 he was the son of the late John Harrison Jackson, Jr. and Virginia Elizabeth Simpson Jackson. In 1967 he graduated from Greene County High School and attended college at the University of Maryland. At the age of 18 he joined the United States Army where he served in Korea and received an honorable discharge after twenty-one years of service. He married the former Hilda Merritt of Greensboro on December 18, 1977. For a while he worked for the Department of Transportation and then he began the career he loved driving a truck. Over the years he worked for Buck Moore Axel, Davis Transfer, Oconee Sand and Gravel, David Paulus and ended with Georgia Wood Preserving. His other interests included working on cars and trucks and story telling of times past.
He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Hilda Merritt Jackson of Siloam, GA; his children, David Martin, “Marty” Dyess (Marie), Elizabeth Marie Jackson, Regina Michelle Jackson, Angela Kristin Jackson-Butler (Mike), Daphne Dyess and Jaye Jackson Bishop (Billy); grandchildren, Bryson, Christian, Chase, Skylar, Prudence, Jorge, Isaiah, Isaac, Samantha and Michael, Jr.; great grandson, Lamarcus, Jr.; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services with military honors will be held on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at McCommons Chapel with Rev. James Bowen officiating.
