John Vaughn Obituary

John Durham “Jack” Vaughn, age 78, of Union Point, Georgia, died Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at Greene Point Health Care Center in Union Point. Born in Maxeys, GA on April 14, 1929 he was the son of the late Joe Lee Vaughn and Kathryn Myrt Smith Vaughn. He later moved to Union Point where he has lived for the last sixty-five years. He attended school in both Maxeys and Union Point. Along with his wife Emily, he owned and operated Jack’s Place in Union Point for fifty-two years retiring July 31, 2000. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point and was secretary to the Woodmen of the World, Camp # 139. Jack was a descendant of several old and distinguished families of this area. He therefore had a great interest in genealogy. His impressive and retentive memory could recount many generations of his family as well as many other old Greene County families. Mr. Vaughn was a well known and often consulted historian of Georgia history. His love of history gave him a passionate interest in antiques and historical data. His greatest pleasure was searching antique shops, estate sales and flea markets, adding to his many collections. Mr. Vaughn was a fascinating man and his is a great loss to Greene County and all things historical. Mr. Vaughn had a great love of nature and was an avid gardener. In addition to his wife of almost 57 years, Emily Cosby Vaughn, of Union Point, GA, he is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Vaughn Bailey of Tucker, GA and Susan Vaughn Spradley and husband David of Athens, GA; two brothers, Joseph L. “Joe” Vaughn of the Macedonia Community and James R. “Bobby” Vaughn of the Macedonia Community; three granddaughters, Jessica Marie Spradley of Athens, GA, Rebekah Anne Bailey of Athens, GA and Jennifer Susan Spradley of Rome, GA; and a number of other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 7, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Union Point with Rev. David Key and Rev. Leonard Ezell officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Union Point. Serving as pallbearers are Byron Fleeman, Alan Fleeman, Jason Fleeman, Eric Fleeman, Brian Vaughn and Ricky Newsom.
