John Hunt Obituary

John Kilburn Hunt of Atlanta, GA, passed away Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at the age of 99. Born in Dixon, Illinois on November 3, 1924, he was the son of the late Harold Victor Hunt and Gertrude Kilburn Hunt. Most of his childhood was spent in his hometown of Van Wert, Ohio. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan, receiving a degree in Forestry. Taking time out during his university years, he enlisted and proudly served his country in the 147th Army Airways Communication Squadron from November 23, 1943 until April 22, 1946.  He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. While in the Army and through the prompting of a fellow soldier, he had a dramatic life-changing conversion to Christianity. After college from 1948 to 1951, he worked for the US Forest Service in Oregon and Idaho and often talked about his enjoyment of time spent in those beautiful places, but he couldn’t resist the strong call he felt to pursue full-time Christian ministry.  He left forestry to attend Faith Seminary in Philadelphia, PA where he met his wife, Inez Simpson. They were married on May 27, 1955 in Greenville, SC.  He later received his Masters degree from Covenant Seminary in St. Louis, MO.  Inez and John dedicated their lives to serve Christ as missionaries for many years… serving in South Korea not long after the Korean War from 1958 to 1980, Australia from 1982 to 1990, and India for 6 months from 1997 to 1998. They retired to Covington, GA in 1990, and later moved to Atlanta in 2009 where they attended Redeemer Orthodox Presbyterian Church and later Westminster Presbyterian Church. After Inez passed away in 2021, John moved to live with his daughter and son-in-law.  His favorite pastimes were teaching, reading, talking with family and friends, discussing history, watching college football (Go Blue!) and the Atlanta Braves, playing tennis, working in the yard with his wife, and, later when his eyesight was failing, listening to sermons and the Bible on CDs.

In addition to his parents, Harold Victor Hunt and Gertrude Kilburn Hunt and his wife, Inez Simpson Hunt, he was preceded in death by his son, John Stephen Hunt (Robin); sister, Barbara Evans; and brother, David Hunt. He is survived by his daughter, Collyn Gomez (Don) of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren: Morgan Gomez of Atlanta, GA, Aaron Hunt (Abi) of Parker, CO, Abby Gomez of Athens, GA, Ellie Hunt of Parker, CO, and Matthew Gomez of Atlanta, GA; nieces and nephews, and many wonderful friends.
