Joel "Joe" Lam Newsom

Joel Lam “Joe” Newsom, age 46, of Union Point, Georgia, died Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Saint Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro.  Joe was a lifelong resident of Greene County and a member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point.  He was born on June 11, 1967, the son of the late Richard Doster Newsom, Sr. and Nancy Jo Dowdy Newsom.  Joe was a 1985 graduate of Greene-Taliaferro County High School and attended the University of Georgia.  For twenty years he worked for Denon Digital Industries, Inc. in Madison.  He recently worked for Wells Fargo Advisors in Greensboro and Broad Street Finance in Union Point.  In his spare time he enjoyed raising chickens and going to chicken shows. He will be remembered for being a very generous person, for his wonderful sense of humor, telling jokes, cutting up with his friends, but most important his love for his family and care for others.   He loved all kinds of animals and was an avid sports fan.
 
In addition to his mother, Nancy Dowdy Newsom, of Union Point, he is survived by his soul mate of twenty-two years, Kathy McElreath of Danielsville, a sister, Sally Adams (Stacy) of the Liberty Community; a brother, Richard "Ricky" Doster Newsom, Jr. (Becky) of Greensboro; a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, many friends, and his beloved dog, Holly Bear.  He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Doster Newsom, Sr.
 
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Union Point, 206 Thornton Street, Union Point, GA 30669 with Rev. Marc D. Lhowe, Dr. David W. Key, Sr., and Dr. Robert L. Whitmire officiating. Interment will follow at Wisteria Cemetery, Rhodes Street, Union Point, GA. Serving as pallbearers are Scott Turner, Taylor Adams, Ron Lee, Jason Bryan, Larry Moore, Horace Wimberly, Ellis Amerson, Jeffery Smith, Alvin Dowdy, and Marty Dowdy. Honorary pallbearers are Ronald McElreath, Stacy Adams, Lowell Harrison, Dr. W. H. Rhodes, Jr., and Red Brooks. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday night at McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro, GA.
