Barbara Joan East Moncrief of Crawfordville, Georgia passed away Monday, February 26, 2024 at her residence. Moving from White Plains, she had lived in Crawfordville, GA for the last sixty-three years. A native of Greene County, she was born April 3, 1938 the daughter of Charles Asbury East, Jr. and Roberta Lipscomb East. She graduated from Greensboro High School, received her B. S. Degree in Middle Grade Education from North Georgia College and furthered her education by acquiring numerous courses at the graduate level at Georgia College and the University of Georgia. She married Carson Moncrief on June 28, 1959 at the White Plains Baptist Church. They had been married for fifty years at the time of his death in 2009. For over forty years she taught in both Oglethorpe and Taliaferro County School Systems. For twenty of these years she was principal of the Crawfordville Baptist Church School. While employed in the Taliaferro County Schools she taught third through sixth grade and in 1992 was selected as Teacher of the Year. She also participated in many staff developmental courses and workshops serving as Director of Drug-Free Schools for the 1992-93 school year. As a member of the Crawfordville Baptist Church, she taught an adult Sunday School Class, served as the pianist, sang in the choir, and served as president of the Wanda Holden Missionary Circle. She was also the WMU Director, church historian and headed the Prayer Team.
She was very dedicated and devoted to her work. Her philosophy was good values, hard work and positive thinking would make a difference in both work and life. She continuously sought ways to motivate her students to achieve the type of education they would need in the future. She retired from teaching in 2001. She continued to enjoy spending time with her family, talking on the phone with friends, her church ministries, serving the Lord and cooking for family and friends.
Survivors include her three daughters, Becky M. Cronic and husband Jeff of Union Point, GA, Melanie M. Finney and husband James of Crawfordville, GA and Laura Moncrief of Union Point, GA; a son Lane Moncrief and wife Leanne of Greensboro, GA; seven grandchildren, Amanda Messer (Brian), Heather Howell (Brett), David Finney (Leah), Elizabeth Moncrief, Rachel Standard (Jamie), Ali Bell (Shane) and Mason Cronic (Lindsey); great grandchildren, Millie Messer, Lani Messer, Livie Howell, Addie Howell, Carson Bell, and Hattie Josephine Standard; many friends and her four-legged roommate, Lucy.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Crawfordville Baptist Church, 142 Memorial Drive, Crawfordville, GA 30631 with Rev. Nelson Goddard officiating. Serving as pallbearers are: David Finney, Mason Cronic, Jamie Standard, Shane Bell, Brett Howell and Brian Messer. Honorary pallbearers will be the Crawfordville Baptist Church deacons. Interment will follow at Siloam Cemetery, Church Street, Siloam, GA 30665. The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 28, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Callaway Funeral Home in Union Point. They request that any memorials in memory of Joan Moncrief be made to the Crawfordville Baptist Church, 142 Memorial Drive, Crawfordville, GA 30631 for the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for North American Missions.
