Jimmy Rex Thurmond

Jimmy Rex Thurmond, age 76, of Greensboro, GA died Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at Kindred Hospice IPU in Athens, GA.  A lifelong resident of Greene County, he was born  on December 28, 1941 in Greensboro to the late Pope Thurmond and Bertha Channell Thurmond.  He graduated from Greensboro High School in 1960.  Growing up he attended the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro.  Jimmy worked for the state of Georgia as a State Health Environmental Inspector for over thirty years servicing many counties.  He retired in 2000.  He was a self taught Farrier and loved to train, break and show horses.  He was also the owner of TNT Dock Builders for a number of years.  His many interests included riding the lake on a Pontoon boat, driving dirt roads and taking historic adventures travelling throughout the south.  He especially enjoyed the mountains when it was snowing.  He also enjoyed spending time with his family and his beloved black lab, Colt.  He was a lifetime member of Harbor Club. 

Jimmy is survived by his children, Melanie Burt of Greensboro, GA, Angela Ellington and  William Ellington of Athens, GA and Jim Thurmond and Celeste Talley of Watkinsville, GA; sisters, Sonya Garner and Dennis Garner, Ruth Thurmond and Geneva O’Neal and Albert O’Neal; five grandchildren, Nicky Johnson and Jason Johnson, Jacob Callaway and Katy Callaway, Chasity Allen, Carrie Bilbo and Tanna McPherson; six great grandchildren, Katherine Gabriel, Beau Gabriel, Taylor Allen, Tennett Allen, Graceland Bilbo and Sara Frances Callaway; loving partner, Betsy Yancey and extended family Bobby Cox, Julie Wright, Caroline and Cameron.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ronda Thurmond; brother, Billy Thurmond and sister, Judy Thurmond.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of His Life will be held Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at McCommons Chapel, 109 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Rev. Dennis Garner and Rev. Mike Pritchett officiating.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until time for the service at McCommons Funeral Home.  Serving as honorary pallbearers are Ronald Thurmond, John Thurmond, Johnny Lewis and Dicky Smith.  The family requests memorials be made to Oconee Regional Humane Society 1020 Park Ave, Greensboro, GA 30642.  McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
