Jean Abell Obituary

Jean Campbell Abell, age 77, of Greensboro, GA died on Friday, February 3, 2012 at her home with loved ones. Mrs. Abell was born August 9, 1934 in Buffalo, New York to the late George M. Campbell of Lansing, Michigan and Dorothy Walker Vrooman Campbell of Middleburg, New York. She graduated from Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont earning a Bachelors of Art in Piano Performance and Composition. She graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida with a Masters in Music Therapy. As a Music Therapist she had two studies on the use of music therapy for developmental disabilities published in international journals. She also presented research at the first World Medical Arts Congress in New York City. She was recognized as Volunteer of the Year while living in Texas. Mrs. Abell was a member of the National Association of Music Therapy and the Association of Junior Leagues. She was the Board Chairman of the Victoria Cultural Council in Texas and Chairman of the Very Special Arts Festival in Texas and New Mexico. She was also head of the Music Therapy Department at Eastern New Mexico University. She was an active and devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro where she served as an Elder and was the organist for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Maitland Abell on June 8, 2011. She is survived by a daughter, Kimberley Beecher of Concord, North Carolina; stepdaughter, Rebecca Wright of Horse Shoe, North Carolina; a son, Campbell Clegg of Brunswick, Maine; four stepsons, Christopher "Chris" Abell and Timothy "Tim" Abell, both of Asheville, North Carolina, Benjamin Abell of Baltimore, Maryland and Theodore "Ted" Abell of Yadkinville, North Carolina; four grandchildren; ten step grandchildren; one step great grandchild; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a brother, Mel Campbell.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 117 South Main Street, Greensboro, Georgia 30642 with Dr. James Choomack officiating.
