Jay Bryans Thurmond

Jay Bryans Thurmond, age 53, of Greensboro, GA, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at St. Mary''s Hospice House in Bogart, GA. Born July 19, 1959 in Greene County he was the son of the late William Jefferson Thurmond, Jr. and Helen Louise Bryans Thurmond. Jay graduated from Nathanael Greene Academy in 1977. He furthered his education at Georgia College where he received his Bachelor''s Degree in Education and obtained his Master''s Degree in Education from Georgia Southern College. Jay taught school at Wilkes Academy, Thomas Jefferson Academy, and Bulloch Academy where he also coached basketball, football and baseball. Jay later attended the University of Georgia and received his Bachelor''s Degree in Accounting. He worked for Deloach and Company, CPA in Atlanta before returning to Greensboro and opening Jay B. Thurmond, CPA where he ran a successful accounting practice. Jay was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants. He was also a member of the Georgia Athletic Officials Association and refereed basketball and umpired baseball in his spare time. Jay was an avid sports enthusiast and had a vast knowledge of sports trivia and statistics. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

He is survived by a son, Nicholas; two daughters, Jessica and Calleigh; two grandchildren, Trey and Mylie; sisters, Yalonde Reese of Greensboro, Marlene Smith and husband Jeffery of Greensboro and Dale Dyer and husband Chris of Blairsville; brother Jeff Thurmond of Greensboro; a number of nieces, nephews and many friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, 1400 Farmington Road, Madison, GA 30650 with Rev. Mike Pritchett officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Faron Beal, Tim Brown, Robert Bradley, Bo Cheves, Jared Smith and Bill Bryans. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night at McCommons Funeral Home. The family requests that any memorials be made to Nathanael Greene Academy, P.O.
