Jan R Wilson

Jan R. Wilson (aka Whyllson), folk artist, writer and poet, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at the age of 71 beginning a new journey. She was born December 2, 1948 and was blessed to be raised by wonderful parents, Lona Mae Lucky Wilson and Aubrey Gresham (Duke) Wilson in Moundville, Alabama and a lifelong partner, Shirley Ann Odom.  From the beginning she recognized she was “a bit” different.  Though she wanted to dig into her mounds, a 1000 year old Mississippian Complex, she was more suited to the arts, first as a dramatist, then as a teacher. She was trained in every form of the arts, but found herself in painting folk art of rural downtowns.  From childhood, her mother read the great poets to her.  She naturally grew from them the spirit of Prosey.  She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Alabama, a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Georgia in Acting and Directing and a Master of Education in English.  Jan had a deep love for her Savior Jesus Christ and was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Union Point, where she was a Sunday School teacher of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and a member of the choir.  She was on the Church Board as the secretary, a member of the United Methodist Women and a member of the Tuesday morning Bible Study where she also taught.  She was also a member of the National League of American Pen Women, Georgia Council of Teachers of English, Greensboro Art Alliance and founding member of Arts Development Council of GA.  She volunteered in many capacities serving others.  She influenced the lives of many children through her teaching in Clarke, Morgan and Greene Counties. Jan wrote a weekly column in the Greensboro Herald Journal entitled Seasons Songs for more than thirty years.  
 
Survivors include Shirley Odom, life long partner,of Greensboro, GA, nephews, Joe L. Edenfield (Patty) of Martinez, GA, Robert Edenfield (Sue) of Waynesboro, GA and Rob McGuire of Gig Harbor, WA; nieces, Barbara Jenkins of Sardis, GA, Jacquelyn Edenfield (David McIntyre) of Savannah, GA, Meredith McGuire of El Cerrito, CA, and Shelly McGuire of  Huntsville, AL; other special family members, Margaret Lucky McGuire of Oakland, CA, Jan Lucky-Thompson of Cornville, AZ, Ann Poe, and Blanche Johnston; a special friend, Mona Villa of Greensboro, GA; and a number of other relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents Lona Mae Lucky and Aubrey G. Wilson of Moundville, Alabama.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 714 Park Avenue, Union Point, GA 30669 with Rev. Deborah Griffith officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until time for the service at the church. Interment will be Monday, February 10, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sylvania, GA. The family request that any memorials be made to the Union Point Methodist Church for the General Fund, UMCOR Missions or the United Methodist Women Missions.  McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
