James "Jay" Mayo Obituary

James Arthur “Jay” Mayo, much loved husband, son, brother, step-dad, granddad and friend, of White Plains, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, December 12, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Thomson, Georgia, on September 7, 1959, Jay was the son of Audrey Clyde Edwards Mayo of White Plains and the late David Eugene Mayo. Jay attended Nathanael Greene Academy and was a 1978 graduate of Greene County High School. Jay began his working career at Horton Homes in Eatonton, Georgia, where he worked for 22 years. After leaving Horton, he worked for Amerigas for a number of years while also running heavy equipment and serving as a hunting guide for Reed Plantation in White Plains. Jay concluded his working career after laboring faithfully as the landscaping manager for Roy Ashley and Associates, Inc. After his retirement, Jay picked up parts and supplies for Plains Logging and Allwood Equipment making many friends at Tigercat and Big Al’s during his numerous trips. On December 22, 2022, Jay married the former Meg Boswell Marshall of Greensboro. Jay loved the outdoors, where he would often point out clouds and sunsets and say, “ain’t God amazing?” He spent much of his time fishing, hunting, raising dogs, and gardening. He loved grilling and sharing his delicious food and homegrown tomatoes with friends and family. He particularly enjoyed bluegrass music, frequently saying it was his favorite because the songs “told a story”. He was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro.

Jay is survived by his beloved wife, Meg Mayo; his loving mother, Audrey Mayo; his siblings, Timmy and Jane Mayo; Pam and Lamar Nix; and Kay and Ben Lanier. He is also survived by his father and mother in law, Andrew and Judy Boswell, as well as bonus children Deanna Blount (Jesse), Lucy Hook (David), Andrew Marshall and Mitch Marshall ( Dorinda). His grandchildren Holly Blount, Nora and Sammy Hook, and Landon, Carah and Tylar Marshall. In addition, he is survived by nieces and nephews David Mayo (Brandi); Meghan Buran (Daniel); Patrick Nix and Chelsey Collins (Mikie) and great nieces and nephews, Levi and Lucy Mayo; Benton and Audrie Collins; and Parker and Carson Buran, along with many other extended family members.
