James Glendy Thornton Sr., age 73, passed away Monday, Aug. 2, 2021 peaceful in his sleep at his home in Greensboro, Ga. Glendy was born in Americus, Ga in 1948. He was the oldest of 3 boys, growing up racing cars and building hot rods in 1960's Albany, Ga. At 19 he volunteered to serve in Vietnam in the 68th Assault Helicopter company (Top Tigers), working all positions on his gunship from 1969 - 1970. He came back to raise his son James Glendy Thornton, Jr. with his wife Sandra in Watkinsville, Ga. He taught vocational automotive at Clarke Central high school 1982 - 1987 and was a beloved teacher. After the phase out of vocational education he opened Thornton's Garage and ran the successful garage for many years as a trusted mechanic. After the garage he ran Thornton's Lawn Maintenance until Parkinsons forced him into retirement where he enjoyed fishing and tinkering.
His father, WJ Thornton, his mother Ruby and his wife Sandra preceded him in death. Glendy is survived by his brothers Tommy and Bobby Thornton; his son James Thornton; his 2 grandchildren Maxine and Emmet Thornton of Nyack, NY; his wife Sheila Craig and her children Dallas and Dustin Craig, of Greensboro, Ga.
